The Yuletide season present a multitude of activities considerably more enjoyable than checking the headlines: discovering surprises, indulging in holiday treats, and employing deep breathing to not yelling at relatives. Hopefully you succeeded in accomplish all these things and more. That said, the showbiz industry doesn't go on vacation, and this is particularly true for the realm of anime. Many thrilling announcements came out over the festive period, and just in case you didn't see a few, here is a summary of the juiciest bits.
Without a doubt the biggest piece of news, the much-discussed controversial season that was season 3 of One-Punch Man wasn't enough to deter further production. The show will come back with a follow-up batch of episodes in 2027—a date so remote they could have labeled it season 4. Even more shocking, the studio J.C. Staff will remain at the helm. At least this time, helmer Shinpei Nagai is set to direct from the start, which could be taken as a hopeful indicator. But, the main art for the second cour is identical to the one used for season 3, just with characters Saitama and Garou facing different directions. This suggests that, nowadays, they are probably teasing the fans.
Kyoto Animation has built a name for being an elite animation studio, distinguishing itself not just for the high caliber of its work but for the good working conditions of its employees—a rarity in the industry. Surprisingly, until now, it had not produced an anime stemming from a manga serialized in Shonen Jump, arguably the most iconic magazine in the industry. Ruri Dragon will end that streak, and what a great choice it is. The manga by Masaoki Shindo gained a huge following when it first appeared in 2022 after just a handful of installments, but then went into a lengthy break due to the mangaka's health issues. When it returned with a lighter schedule, the series proved it still retained the fans' support and enthusiasm, and now the community is ecstatic about the forthcoming KyoAni adaptation.
Kingdom is the highly popular, decades-spanning Shueisha manga that is not One Piece. If you've never heard of it before, it's because it only recently got an English translation, but the anime has been running for some time, and its sixth season was another stellar entry. As it happens that was just the initial batch, because a "sequel" has been announced as currently being made, and it will probably debut in 2026.
Another studio famous for the superior craftsmanship of its projects, Science Saru has given us masterpieces of the caliber of Space Dandy, Devilman Crybaby, and, more recently, Dandadan. This time, the studio will be producing the adaptation of Tomato Soup's manga A Witch's Life in Mongol, inspired by the real historical figure of Fatima, an powerful woman and scholar in the Mongol Empire in the 13th century. Based on the trailer, the anime called Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia will have a highly unique and fascinating visual style, which is somewhat reminiscent of Ranking of Kings. Set to premiere in July 2026, this one will absolutely be on my watchlist.
Immediately following the airing of its twenty-fourth episode, it was announced that Tougen Anki will be receiving a sequel. Adapted from the Japanese legend of Momotaro, Tougen Anki adapts the manga by Yura Urushibara. The new season of the anime will cover the Nikko Kegon Falls Arc, but a concrete release date has not been disclosed yet.
