Three members of law enforcement perished and more than a dozen people sustained injuries in a seemingly deliberate gas explosion at a farmhouse in Italy's north.
The detonation was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the house in the vicinity of the Verona region to execute an removal notice for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.
All three victims who died were members of the Italian military police.
Two individuals were arrested at the site and another man who escaped following the blast was found soon after. Each of them have been transported to medical facility.
The blast could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the location revealed the structure turned into a mass of wreckage.
“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that efforts had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.
The head of the Veneto area, the regional head, said the farmhouse was under an removal notice due to debts accrued by the property owners.
Negotiators had been sent to talk with the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the police arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think a family member caused the detonation.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander Claudio Papagno told news outlets.
A propane tank had been activated, and the blast precisely impacted our officers,” he added.
Molotov cocktails were also located at the residence, the interior minister confirmed.
The wounded by the blast consisted of eleven more officers of the military police as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a fire services member.
Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.
The prosecutor was convinced the explosion had taken place on a story above the access point and informed reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the incident, he revealed personnel had “detected a whistling noise, probably the gas cylinders being turned on”.
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors informed local news, noting that the trio had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than vacate the property.
“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in commemorating the three men who had been killed in the service of their country.
